Despite the wet weather, it didn’t
rain on the launch of the new Mount Sinai’s Center
for Excellence in Children’s Environmental Health
at North Shore Medical Group in Huntington on Oct. 15th.
Many people took time out of
their busy morning to attend the launch held at Rainbow
Chimes, Inc Pre-School in Huntington. The keynote speakers
were world-renowned pediatrician Philip Landrigan, MD,
Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and New York State Senator
Carl L. Marcellino who provided funding for the new center.
Karen Miller, president of the Huntington Breast Cancer
Action Coalition and Prevention Is The Cure, Inc. spoke
about how their efforts and enthusiasm were key to the
Center’s establishment.
The Center provides consultations,
referrals and medical management to children diagnosed
with diseases that are possibly linked to toxins in the
environment and to children who have been exposed to toxic
substances.
Dr. Landrigan, a physician at
the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, is an international
leader in public health and preventive medicine. His riveting
speech captured the crowd’s attention when he discussed
the connection between environmental toxins and the impact
they have on our children’s health.
Also a big supporter of environmental
health is Senator Marcellino, who has sponsored laws to
protect the health of New Yorkers. For almost 15 years
Senator Marcellino has been an avid supporter for the
Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition’s environmental
programs including providing the funding for Look Before
You L.E.A.P., a line of education materials created by
HBCAC. These materials provide environmental health information
in an entertaining manner for children and their families.
The Center for Excellence
in Children’s Environmental Health at North Shore
Medical Group is a wonderful resource for the community,
and would not have been possible without the support of
Senator Marcellino, Dr. Landrigan and the staff at North
Shore Medical Group. Visit the location at 241 E. Main
Street, Huntington and to speak to a health expert call
866-265-6201.
