Rotary
Luncheon Recap
Emilie Schneider
Good food
and good friends was the theme at the Rotary Club of Huntington’s
and the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition’s
annual luncheon for breast cancer awareness month.
Every
October members organize a spectacular event at a star
restaurant in town where many business people in the community
come to express their support and enjoy a delicious meal
with friends.
Attendees
heard the exceptional accomplishments of the Huntington
Breast Cancer Action Coalition this year. These accomplishments
include the recent launch of Mount Sinai’s Center
for Excellence in Children’s Environmental Health
at North Shore Medical Group in Huntington and the unanimous
passing of the Toxin Free Toddlers and Babies Act.
The children’s
center was established to provide families with consultations
and referrals for their children who are diagnosed with
diseases that are possibly linked to environmental toxins.
The Toxin Free Toddlers and Babies Act can help to diminish
the number of these cases because it makes Suffolk County
the first BPA-free jurisdiction in the nation.
HBCAC
is also proud of four local high school students from
the Students & Scientists Environmental Research Scholarship
Program who will be presenting their respective research
about the role of environmental exposure and human health
at the sixth annual Early Environmental Exposures conference
in California next month.
“These
are among a few of our highlights,” said Karen Miller,
president and founder of HBCAC.
She said
she is forever grateful to the Rotarians and others who
attended the luncheon and for their commitment to HBCAC.
The Rotary
Club also presented HBCAC with a generous donation and
administered a raffle which will help to support Miller’s
programs.
