JoAnn Abatelli and Laura Meehan met August 1,
1959 on Abby Drive in East Northport. Their homes were part
of a new housing development called Gaylore Gardens. They
grew up across the street from each other and have been best
friends ever since. Both enjoyed a wonderful, creative childhood
with the freedom to frolic in the neighboring farmland along
with Laura’s younger sister Carol and dozens of other children
on Abby Drive.
In 1986 at the age of 29, Carol was diagnosed
with breast cancer. So began the journey with cancer. In 1996,
JoAnn was diagnosed with breast cancer and in 1999 Laura was
diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. In 2003, Carol was
again diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2007 Laura was diagnosed
with breast cancer. All three continue to survive and thrive,
working hard to educate others and provide emotional support
for those who are newly diagnosed. Laura retired in June from
the Syosset School District after a 33 year teaching career
and JoAnn works in the Admirals Club for American Airlines.
In 2007, Be Jeweled by Laura & JoAnn,
was launched based on a passion and a desire to create unique
jewelry and accessories. EmBraceable You
is a new collection of bracelets designed by Laura & JoAnn
and dedicated to support the work of Huntington Breast Cancer
Action Coalition. For twenty years HBCAC, a grassroots breast
cancer organization has provided support services, improved
access to care and conducted educational programs on risk
reduction and prevention of disease. In addition, young residents
of Huntington are assisting with the construction and sale
of bracelets.

EmBraceable You will donate 30% of sales to HBCAC
to support their programs. The complete line of bracelets
will be available this fall and new designs will be added.
