MALE CALL
By Joe DeVito
I must admit I was a little apprehensive when HBCAC asked me to offer a few words for their newsletter. “After all,” I
wondered, “Am I man enough to contribute to their ‘Male Call’ column?” So I put down my new issue of Cosmopolitan,
canceled my waxing appointment, slipped into something frilly, and got to work.
After much soul-searching and several banana daiquiris, here’s what I can tell you about
the women behind the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition: Don’t be fooled by the
pink ribbons and smiling faces -- these are some tough broads. The hard work they do
makes it easy for the rest of us to do our part. Thanks to the HBCAC, making a difference
can be as easy as offering support for a neighbor’s treatment, volunteering to serve on a
committee, or attending a fundraising event.
I’m a stand-up comedian. My talents are limited to telling jokes and receiving
the occasional pie in the face, skills that have rendered me unsuitable for
most gainful employment. But alongside the HBCAC, I’ve helped present a successful comedy night fundraiser, now in
its second year. If I can make a difference, you can too.
Breast cancer affects the women we love and who love us. They take care of us, and when it’s time for us to take care
of them, the HBCAC is a great place to start.
p.s. If you can recommend a place for a great pedicure, I’m all ears.
