Former Dix Hills resident and art tour guide Marilyn Scherr has once again created an unparalleled event for art lovers and enthusiasts. A breast cancer survivor, Mrs. Scherr has been organizing this annual art tour especially for HBCAC for 7 years. Prior tours have included visits to the studios of renowned painter Hunt Slonem and premier public artist Tom Otterness. “This year the visits will be extraordinary,” she explained. “Our access to these private collections is simply a very rare and exciting opportunity.”
The first stop is to the home of SoHo based philanthropist and avid collector Henry Buhl. The Buhl Collection began in October 1993 with Henry Buhl’s purchase of Alfred Stieglitz’s photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe’s hand entitled Hands and Thimble, 1920. Inspired by this single image, he has amassed a collection of over 1,000 photographs developed around the theme of hands. Encompassing the history of photography, The Buhl Collection has works dating from 1840 to the present and includes such legendary photographers as Diane Arbus, Annie Leibovitz, Edward Weston and Robert Capa.
The second stop will be to the Gramercy Park
duplex of gallerist Tim Nye, founder of the Thread Waxing
Space. Founded in 1991, Thread Waxing Space (TWS) is a non-profit
arts and education space that promotes and presents works
of art not ordinarily accessible to the public. His 1,800-square-foot
apartment in the recesses of a landmark 1840’s mansion houses
not only his personal residence but also Nyehaus, a contemporary
art gallery.
A fantastic luncheon will await tour guests
at the glamorous Lure Fishbar restaurant. Set sail in SoHo
nearly three years ago, Lure is winner of the 2005 & 2007
TONY Best New Seafood Restaurant. Its nautical allure and
fresh seafood are both stunning!
The tour will close with a visit to Feuerman Studios, Inc.
owned and operated by American realist sculptor Carole A.
Feuerman. Her artworks are included in the selected collections
of President Bill Clinton & Senator Hillary Clinton, Dr.
Henry Kissinger, President Gorbachov, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art and the Forbes Magazine Art Collection.
